Yesterday was the first time in my life that I have ever seen a poor kitty who was blocked, writhing in pain and screaming as he tried to relieve himself. It was so bad that he eventually fell into shock and we were able to pass an urethral catheter without sedation and give him some slight relief. It was a very stressful situation for all involved, and of course the poor thing was a walk in that had been waiting all day. He was triaged and not noticeably blocked or in distress when he first arrived, but by the time I got to him he was in a lot of pain. Thankfully he was a very sweet boy. Now I know how traumatizing it is for owners who have no idea what’s going on with their baby. The sound of his crying was goose bump inducing, and the constant vomiting or excrement coming out because he was straining so hard was heartbreaking. All I wanted to do was help this little guy and get him through everything.
Just another day in the veterinary field I suppose.
